Treasury to End Over-the-Counter
Sales of Paper U.S. Savings Bonds (back to top)
The U.S. Department of the Treasury has announced it will end over-the-counter sales of paper savings bonds at the end of this year. This includes sales of savings bonds through financial institutions and applications mailed directly to the Federal Reserve Bank by customers. This move is expected to save taxpayers an estimated $70 million over the next five years.
In response to this change, Visions will not be accepting applications for new paper savings bonds after December 31, 2011. We will, however, continue to redeem matured bonds. Although paper bonds are being discontinued, electronic Series EE and Series I Savings Bonds will remain available for purchase through TreasuryDirect via their website at www.treasurydirect.gov. This secure, web-based system, operated by the Bureau of the Public Debt, has been used by investors since 2002 to buy, manage and redeem electronic bonds. To sign up or learn more about electronic savings through TreasuryDirect, visit www.treasurydirect.gov.
